Gluten Free Gusto

Just a few years ago being gluten-free in Shanghai was more than a hassle. There were a few expensive gluten-free products on the grocery shelves and forget about any restaurant knowing what you were asking for when you asked about menu items.

Then Gluten-Free China came to Shanghai and a community was born. Through their tireless efforts being gluten-free, for whatever reason, in Shanghai (and Beijing) is now much, much easier. And you aren’t alone! Gluten-Free Shanghai started a peer support WeChat group in January whose members are constantly ringing in with helpful hints from doctors to products . To join this very chatty group, search WeChat ID Gluten-Free Shanghai

More and more products are becoming available in Shanghai at the shops and online. Kate& Kimi (www.kateandkimi.com) carries a large amount of GF baked products; Sandi’s Gluten-free shop caters specifically to people following a gluten free diet. Sandi delivers prepared baked foods as well as specialty flours, GF packaged products and many allergy friendly products. Sandi, of course, also has a WeChat, the ID is Special Treats. Just want to browse her online shop? Check www.gfchopstix.com or  call 13524057692.

More restaurants are aware of the gluten free dietary restriction and some even have menu items catering to gluten-free patrons.  Sproutlifestyle Café is a very popular gluten free café located at Shaanxi Nan lu and Fuxing lu. Check the Sproutlifestyle website(www.sproutlifestyle.com) for the wide offering of healthy cooking classes for gluten free eating at home.

Gluten-free Shanghai is more than just an online community resource, they also hold monthly socials around town and welcome all ( including kids!). The next one is Sunday April 10th. Check www.gluten-freechina.com/april-get-together-in-shanghai/   for all the event details.

Nutrition Q&A

The Shanghai Nutrition Practice Group is a group of nutrition professionals living and working in Shanghai. We meet on a regular basis for discussions on timely nutrition issues. Generally the group limits membership to people with training in nutrition or a related science, such as food science, nursing, wellness and naturopathy. This month we are very excited to offer all this experience to the public free of charge.

On Monday , November 16th from 10:30 am – 12 pm at  the SproutLifestyle Café, the Shanghai Nutrition Practice Group has teamed up with Gluten-Free China and the nutrition wellness experts at SproutLifestyle  for an open nutrition question and answer event.

Whatever urgent question you have in the broad field of nutrition; general wellbeing, weight management, digestion or  special diets, come ask the  best experts available in Shanghai.

Kimberly Ashton (Health Coach at Sprout Lifestyle), Margaret Keefe (RDN at Shanghai United Family Hospital and Eat Well Shanghai)  Sanna Luoto (MS Food Science from Gluten-Free China) and John Vallis (Dr. of Naturopathy) are ready to answer your questions!

Not only will you be able to have your important nutrition questions answered but if you have ever wondered if gluten or celiac may be an issue for you , Gluten Free China will be at the event and they will be doing  on the spot tests with their BiocardTM Coeliac Test

The event is free but you must register if you would like to take the celiac test.

For the test please RSVP to laura @ gluten-freechina.com by Nov 13. A registered nurse will be there to assist in taking the test.

Congratulations GFS!

What a difference a year makes!  One year ago I was sitting in a café chatting with Sanna Luoto and Pia Heikkurinen and Hanna Hillila, three very ambitious women devoted to building a gluten-free community in Shanghai.  Little did I know then that one year later  the modest goals of gluten free Shanghai would soon become those of Gluten Free China.

GFS started with a commitment to serve and support expats in Shanghai with celiac disease, of which a gluten-free diet is the only known treatment at this point, and people who are gluten intolerant. As part of this service they also work to educate the expat community on the celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. Their work this year has included educational workshops, including the popular GF baking workshops at Sprout lifestyle. One huge accomplishment was the partnership with Bastiaan Bakery to provide delicious gluten-free baked goods the community.  Just as big an event as the delicious gluten free baked goods was the introduction last fall of a home celiac test, the  BiocardTM Celiac Test for instant detection of coeliac disease.

There is no stopping this group.  Sign up for their newsletter to learn about all the  big plans for the fall (www.glutenfreeshanghai.com) . Very exciting for me will be the  introduction of their online gluten-free grocery directory. No more “hoping” you will find some gluten free products on the shelf, Gluten Free China will find them for you.

Eat Well Shanghai is proud to be associated with Gluten Free China and  wishes Gluten Free China the best for this next year !

Well Done Team!
